Sanger West High School only opened its campus two years ago, but its athletic program has already come a long way. That’s especially true for the Hornets’ softball team.
Thanks in part to talented student-athletes like sophomore Mia Arriola, the softball team is off to an 8-1 start in league.
Arriola has recorded 14 hits on the season, along with 19 RBI and two home runs, per MaxPreps.
“My travel team Dirtdogs Vasquez has prepared me for the season and my mentality has helped it a lot,” the sophomore said.
The Hornets have put together several blowouts victories in league play. Those wins include a 20-0 win against Hoover, 7-0 vs Fresno High, 16-3 vs Matilda Torres and 14-1 vs Sunnyside.
Sanger West also had a 10-5 win against McLane, the team which also has an 8-1 record currently in the North Yosemite League.
Arriola said the key for her team is “building that bond and chemistry on and off the field.”
Playing on a young program that is led by sophomores and juniors, Arriola said she’s happy to step into a leadership role.
“Me and our other captain really work to help the team a lot,” she said, adding that the team is “taking it one game at a time and improving every time we step on the field.”
