After a rough first two games of the series, the Diamond Dogs (10-13, 3-3) stave off a sweep from UNLV with an 8-7 win over the Rebels.
Catcher Justin Strasky hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season and first baseman Cayden Munster went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs driven in, including a go-ahead knock in the seventh inning. Murf Gray also went 3-for-5, leading the ‘Dogs in hits on the day.
What happened?
The Bulldogs got a quick run in the top of the first, scoring Eddie Saldivar thanks to a passed ball. UNLV responded with a two-run single in the bottom half of the inning from right fielder Cole Koniarsky. The Rebels extended its lead to 3-1 in the second inning with a sacrifice fly from Cooper Sheff.
Fresno State starter Kaleb Hay was pulled after just two innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on 47 pitches.
The Diamond ‘Dogs got things going in the third inning offensively, seemingly for the first time all weekend. Following a single from Gray and a walk to Bobby Blandford, Cam Schneider lined a single into left center. He would advance to second following an error, allowing both Gray and Blandford to score. Munster then hit a gapper into right center, plating Schneider for an RBI double.
The lead didn’t last. The Rebels would score four runs in the fourth inning, including a three-run homer from JP Hefft.
An error and a hit-by-pitch gave a prime opportunity for Stransky in the top of the sixth, who put a ball over the left field fence. The following inning, Munster singled to left, scoring Blandford and taking the lead, 8-7.
Drew Townson got his fourth win of the season, throwing four innings in relief. All four runs allowed came in the fourth inning before he recovered to throw scoreless frames in the fifth and sixth innings.
JT Guerrero picked up his save after shutting down the Rebels the final three innings. The Visalia native allowed five hits but no runs, while striking out three.
What’s next?
The Bulldogs head north for a mid week matchup against the Sacramento State Hornets. First pitch on Tuesday from John Smith Field is set for 6 p.m.
Fresno State doesn’t return home to Pete Beiden Field until March 31, when the Bulldogs will host Cal Poly for a Monday afternoon day game.
