Bullard’s Julia Salem Is A Scoring Machine On The Pitch

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

Bullard’s Julia Salem is finding the back of the net almost on a daily basis. The standout junior has scored at least one goal in eight of Bullard’s first nine games of the season. Salem only went scoreless when the Knights lost 4-0 against Carondelet (Concord, CA) on Dec. 8.

The super striker credits her teammates for the success she has been having.

“I’ve really been enjoying this season so far, my team and I have been connecting well, they are finding me in good spaces, giving me great opportunities,” she said.

Salem also showed off her scoring ability as a sophomore and continued to work on her game after the season.

“For me, there really is no off-season. I train consistently,” she said. “I play club soccer, high school soccer and train with Myrick McGee at sports mindset training. We work on a handful of things from speed and agility to position specific drills.”

As a junior, Salem has had several games where she scored multiple goals. The super striker recorded braces against Bakersfield Christian on Dec. 1 and against Turlock on Dec. 12. Salem was especially happy with the brace she recorded in a 5-0 win against Bakersfield Christian.

“I scored two nice goals, one I’m very pleased with scoring outside the 18 yard box,” she said. “Our team connected very well that game, which gave us the win.”

Bullard stands at 4-3-2 on the season. The Knights are feeling confident as they get ready to start league play.

“I feel good. I see good qualities in us,” Salem said. “But just like everyone else we are still developing and becoming a solid team day by day.”

For Salem, the key is to stay dedicated to her training routine.

“I think the routine that I currently have is something that’s keeping me on the right path as far as what I want to become,” the junior said. “Just like all things to be great you have to work at it everyday to become what you want.”

Edison’s Va’Ron Mitchell Is Trusting His Coaches And It’s Paying Off

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

Edison High School hooper Va’Ron Mitchell is proving himself as one of the elite all-around players in the Central Section. Mitchell is regularly getting buckets in the half court offense and also forcing turnovers at a high rate to create fastbreak opportunities. And it’s not by accident that Mitchell has evolved into an all-around hooper.

“Honestly it’s been a lot of film study, asking questions in practice, talking with my coaches on how I can improve in order to make it to the next level,” Mitchell said. “Just following what my coaches has told me.”

The senior had one of his best performances against the West Vikings (Bakersfield) on Dec. 6, finishing with 22 points, six rebounds and four steals. He also finished multiple fastbreak opportunities with dazzling dunks. The strong all-around performance was another testament to Mitchell’s willingness to trust his coaches.

“I really started getting with my coaches like Michael Potts, Michael Fulford, Terrant elliot, Justin Ayers and started to ask how I can get better,” the Edison student-athlete said.

Mitchell is especially proud of his team’s performance against Stockdale on Dec. 7, where he scored 18 points on 58% shooting to help the Tigers get a 60-43 win.

“It was a big rival in the past two years, we was facing a lot of adversity with my teammates and guys had to step up in different roles and we played together as a team,” Mitchell said. “It was good watching my teammates step into different roles, but that game they showed what they really can do and I just added what I bring to this team and it all clicked.”

Edison is off to a 5-5 start on the season. The Tigers have earned several dominant wins, but have also ended up on the opposite end a few times.

“Honestly, I think that we gave some games away early this season, but we are starting to build our chemistry and we are getting two of our core guys back from the the transfer sit out period,” Mitchell said. “Once they get back it will click and our culture will be up to par.”

For Mitchell, the key is to keep trusting his coaches.

“We have a lot of talks privately and I’m understanding more and more in order for me to be the best version of myself, to give 100% every game,” he said. “And that is what the next step is going to be for me.”

Fresno State Prepares For Kent State’s Run-Heavy Offense

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

The Fresno State defense is gearing up to slow down Kent State’s run-heavy offense in Saturday’s matchup at Valley Children’s Stadium. Looking at the numbers so far this season, it’s easy to see how much Kent State favors the run game. Here are some of those stats:

  • Kent State ran the ball 54 times for 295 yards in last week’s 38-10 win against Central Connecticut. Meanwhile, junior quarterback Michael Alaimo only completed 12/16 passes for 172 yards and a touchdown.
  • Sophomore running back Gavin Garcia, the featured back for Kent State, has carried the ball 57 times for 238 yards and two touchdowns in the 2023 season. However, Garcia doesn’t have a single reception so far this year.
  • Alaimo has completed just 35/64 passes on the season with a touchdown and three interceptions.

In his press conference this week, Kent State head coach Kenni Burns said he was proud of how his offensive line opened up lanes for the running game against Central Connecticut.

“The o-line and the running backs had a really good week of practice. We challenged them . . . demanded more out of them. It paid off on Saturday. They played harder, they played harder for longer, they played nastier. That’s what we have to do up front,” Burns said. “It was a good performance up front. They gotta grow off of it.”

Fresno State allowed only 42 rushing yards in last week’s shutout victory against Arizona State. Defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle said he was pleased with how the Bulldogs’ came out with with energy from the start against Arizona State.

“We started quickly and did a good job against the run. I believe they had 1.6 yards a carry. That sets up everything else when you can do a good job against the run like we did,” Coyle said. “And then have opportunities to get after the quarterback, which we took advantage of . . . it was a good all-around effort the by the defense.”
