Buchanan’s Hilton Green continues to take his performance to new heights. The senior pole vaulter has recorded a pair of rare achievements in the past week.
Green first posted a jump of 16-06 at the West Coast Relays on April 1, which is the best boys pole vault mark in 32 years by a CIF Central Section athlete according to PrepCalTrack editor Rich Gonzalez.
“It’s just mind blowing to me because my first full year of pole vault was last year,” Green told Fresno Sports Magazine. “I am very honored to be up on a list with people that jump really high.”
Shortly after his stellar performance at the West Coast Relays, Green finished first at the Arcadia Invitational and set a school record, registering a mark of 16-9.
The Buchanan senior credits his experience in gymnastics and football for the success he’s having in track-and-field.
“I think gymnastics has helped me become a good pole vaulter because of the body control I have when going over the bar,” he said. “But football has given me my speed and overall competitive attitude.”
In his short time in track-and-field, Green has produced several other memorable moments. One of those moments happened when he was a freshman at Clovis North.
“I beat the school record for the first time at Clovis North,” Green said. “I was the last person to compete and everyone was watching and clapping for me. It was a very cool experience.”
Green also finished second in pole vault at the 2022 state championships. The senior said he will never forget the electric atmosphere of that prestigious event.
“That was my first state meet I have been to and you don’t really understand how many people are there until they are all looking at you jump,” he said.
The Buchanan Bears star has committed to the University of Oklahoma for track and field. But he is still looking to make many memories before his high school journey is complete.
“Some goals I have for the rest of the season is to jump over 17 feet and be top 3 in the nation,” he said.
