Clovis East is finally in the win column! The Timberwolves picked up their first league win with an upset against Clovis High, which entered the game undefeated in TRAC.
The first-place Cougars took a 2-0 lead early in the game, but Clovis East rallied in the third inning to make it a 2-2 tie. The teams went back-and-forth until the final inning when Clovis East closed it out with two runs.
Clovis East’s Noah Melendez drove in Connor Sandoval in the third to start the comeback rally. Aiden Corkery then drove in Tristan Kircher for the tying run. Corkery drove in another run in the fifth to make it 3-3. The Timberwolves trailed 4-3 going into the seventh, but took the lead for good with a double from Preston Gaeta.
Senior Joey Ziese got the start on the mound for the Timberwolves, then gave way to Hunter Yarbrough in the sixth.
Sophomore Maddox Merrill recorded two hits and two runs for the Cougars. Junior Drake Davis and sophomore Deagan Rose also tallied a run each for Clovis.
Cougars senior Arturo Becerra pitched five innings, allowing five hits and striking out one batter. Marcel Leal pitched two innings for Clovis High and struck out three batters.
Clovis High and Clovis West stand atop the TRAC with a 7-1 record. Clovis North is third (4-4), Central is fourth (3-5), Buchanan (2-6), Clovis East (1-7).
